| Mediterranean Sea - French Riviera |
This year I’ve spent
the summer holidays at the French Riviera, to be more precise, in
Cannes. The ersthwhile fishing village is nowadays famous for its international
film festival. Thus I wanted to check it out ;)
Our hotel
was in the district „La Bocca“ in the west of Cannes, not far away from the airport. To get to the city center, we walked along the Boulevard de la Croisette,
which is the beach promenade of Cannes. The view was fantastic! Along the
promenade you’ll find little beach kiosks, with respective prices. The closer
you get to the city center, the more beach bars and private beaches you’ll
find.
Near the port
at the city center of Cannes, there are lots of boutiques of famous brands. The
Rue d’Antibes is also a good place to shop, whereas the Rue de Meynardier is a
bit less expensive. The Palais de Festivals as well as the façade of the Gare
des Autobus and the old town of Cannes, called “Le Suqet”, are also worth
seeing.

On food, I
can recommend the Lebanese restaurant „Lemonot“[12 rue Hélène Vagliano]. I
had “Chawarma Poulet”, which was, like all meals at this restaurant,
housemade. For dessert, we went to the Häagen Dazs store [4 rue
d'Antibes].
Cannes is
not far away from Nice and Monaco, so it is worth a day trip. You can get to
both of these cities from Cannes under an hour (Nice, ca. 45 min) or in one
hour (Monaco) by car. Also recommendable is Grasse, the city of perfumers,
which is a 30 min car ride from Cannes way. Grasse is less touristic than the
other cities mentioned above and thus for all those who like it more quiet.

On our day
trip to Monaco we went by the oceanographic museum of Monaco. Next to the
museum there is a park [Les jardins de Saint Martin], from where you get a
fantastic look out on the Mediterranean Sea. You also need to visit the
cathedral Notre-Dame-Immaculée, where the tombs of the princely family are.
Another highlight of the day was the Princely Palace of Monaco. Unfortunately
we hadn’t time to visit the palace from inside. Still the look out on the ports
from the public open place in front of it the Princely Palace is also awesome.
In Monte Carlo, which is a district of Monaco, is the Casino area, but there are as well nice garden
facilities. We also visited the Champions Promenade, which is a Walk of Fame
for soccer players who won the “Golden Foot” award. They've left their foot or
hand prints along this promenade.

We also
went on a day trip to Nice. There we first visited the orthodox Russian
cathedral Saint-Nicolas. This cathedral is worth seeing due to its architecture
as well as its inside. Afterwards we went to the city center and also to the
market. On the market you can buy a lot of dainties [Macarons, honey, spices,
candies] as well as all kind of souvenirs. Typical souvenirs for the French
Riviera are lavender bags, parfums and soap. I've even seen soap in the shape
of macarons.

The
highlight of this day was the visit of the villa Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint
Jean Cap Ferrat. The villa itself is an eyecater. It was built by the baroness
Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild to store her huge collection of arts. Around
the villa there are several themed gardens. They are also beautiful and from
there you also get a phenomenal look out on the sea to both sides of the villa!

Dieses Jahr ging es im Sommerurlaub an die Côte d’Azur, um genauer zu sein, nach Cannes. Das einstige Fischerdörfchen ist mittlerweile
dank der jährlich stattfindenden internationalen Filmfestspiele sehr bekannt,
weshalb ich es mal genauer unter die Lupe nehmen wollte ;)
Unser Hotel lag im eher abgelegenen Stadtteil „La Bocca“ im
Westen von Cannes, wo sich auch der Flughafen befindet. Zum Stadtzentrum ging
es daher entlang der Boulevard de la Croisette, der Strandpromenade von Cannes,
welche einen tollen Ausblick auf das Meer bietet. An der Promenade entlang
finden sich alle paar Meter kleine Strandkioske mit entsprechenden Preisen. Je
näher man dem Stadtzentrum kommt, desto mehr Strandbars und kostenpflichtige
Privatstrände finden sich.
Im Stadtzentrum selbst befinden sich in der Nähe des Hafens
zahlreiche namenhafte Boutiquen. Auch die Rue d’Antibes bietet gute Shoppingmöglichkeiten.
Etwas günstiger ist hingegen die Rue de Meynardier :) Sehenswert ist neben dem
Palais des Festivals auch die Fassade des Gare des Autobus sowie die Altstadt
von Cannes, genannt „Le Suquet“.

Was das Essen angeht, war ich hier im „
Lemonot“ [12 rue
Hélène Vagliano], einem libanesischen Restaurant, in dem alle Speisen
hausgemacht sind. Hier hatte ich das Gericht „Chawarma Poulet“. Fürs Dessert
ging es in den Häagen Dazs [4 rue d'Antibes].
Cannes liegt nicht weit entfernt von Nizza und Monaco,
sodass sich hier ein Tagesausflug auf jeden Fall lohnt. An diese beiden Orte
kommt man von Cannes aus unter einer Stunde (Nizza, ca. 45 min) oder in knapp
einer Stunde (Monaco) leicht mit dem Auto hin. Auch Grasse, die Stadt der
Parfumeure, liegt nur eine halbe Autofahrstunde von Cannes entfernt und ist
ebenfalls einen Besuch wert, wenn man es etwas ruhiger mag.

In Monaco waren wir
nur einen Tag lang. Neben dem Ozeanographischen Museum von Monaco und den
direkt daran angrenzenden Gärten [Les jardins de Saint Martin], welche einen
fantastischen Ausblick auf das Mittelmeer erlauben, ist die Kathedrale
Notre-Dame-Immaculée mit den Gräbern der Fürstenfamilie sowie der Fürstenpalast
selbst sehenswert. Für eine Innenbesichtigung hatten wir diesmal keine Zeit,
aber dafür konnten wir mittags die Wachablösung anschauen. Auch der Ausblick
vom Platz vor dem Fürstenpalast auf die Häfen ist phänomenal. In Monte Carlo,
einem Stadtteil Monacos, gibt es neben dem Casino, sowie zahlreichen
Gartenanlagen, die Champions Promenade, einem Walk of Fame für Fußballspieler,
die die Auszeichnung „Golden Foot“ gewonnen haben und entsprechend ihren Fuß-
oder Handabdruck dort hinterlassen haben.

Nach Nizza haben wir ebenfalls einen Tagesausflug gemacht.
Dabei haben wir zuerst die russisch-orthodoxe Kathedrale Saint-Nicolas besucht,
welche architektonisch und auch vom Innenleben sehenswert ist. Danach ging es
ins Stadtzentrum und anschließend auf den Markt, wo es neben vielen Leckereien
[Macarons, Honig, Gewürze, Bonbons] auch allerlei Souvenirs zu kaufen gibt
[Lavendelsäckchen, Seife, Seife in Macaronform, etc].

Das Highlight des Tages war aber der Besuch der Villa
Ephrussi de Rothschild in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat. Die Villa, welche schon von
der Baroness Beatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild zu Museumszwecken gebaut wurde,
ist selbst ein Hingucker. Die sich darum befindlichen Gärten mit ihren
verschiedenen Themen krönen den Besuch nicht zuletzt wegen ihren fantastischen
Ausblicken auf das Meer und das zu beiden Seiten der Villa!
